Architecture for a better urban future.
Architecture brings together arts and engineering, craftsmanship and social science. The profession provides for a unique opportunity to translate meaningful cultural expression in the built form. Humankind throughout the centuries has struggled with the attainment of shelter and modern day architects have built on this dream. They have drawn from nature and from their cultural contexts to develop visions that give special meaning to our built environment.
Sometimes these visions are utopian, sometimes purely functional but it is the passion to improve the living conditions that drives the profession. I call upon the architects, not only as a professional body but as individuals with acute sensibilities and a special sense for symmetry, to contribute and help us deal with the biggest challenges of our times; urbanization, climate change, displacement and inequality.
Architects can provide us with innovative solutions for material use, housing typologies and shelter, urban patterns, nature-based solutions and public spaces; your panache for design and your mediating role between art and pragmatism, will help contribute to cities and communities that are resilient, safe, human and inclusive.
